Diabetes Wellness Day Midlands 2020
Managing and living with diabetes can present many challenges, which is why we have created our Diabetes Wellness Days to help inform, educate, inspire and empower all people living with the condition.
This year DRWF will be the 4th Diabetes Wellness Day Midlands, which forms part of our annual programme of educational events. Over the last decade, the educational event programme has gone from strength to strength in providing information, advice, support and the practical skills needed to manage and improve life for people living with diabetes. We are pleased that this recently created event is continuing to follow this tradition.
Why should I attend a Diabetes Wellness Day?
The Diabetes Wellness Days bring together a wealth of information under one roof for people living with diabetes, their family members, carers, friends and those with an interest in the condition. The chance to learn, explore and gather the tools, understanding and practical skills needed to improve life with diabetes and the keys to healthier living are provided, ensuring all participants have the opportunity to raise their questions, share their experiences and enjoy the support of a friendly, like-minded diabetes community in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. At our days you can learn how to take better control of your diabetes and go home armed with the know-how to change your life and health for the better.
What can I expect at a Diabetes Wellness Day?
Each Diabetes Wellness Day consists of a central exhibition area, which forms the ‘hub’ of the event. Here you will have the opportunity and flexibility to spend as much time as you like visiting the stands and chatting with a variety of healthcare professionals, community groups, holistic practitioners and diabetes industry experts who will be on hand to offer advice on diet, health, lifestyle and the latest blood-glucose meters and diabetes-related products and services. A variety of stands, separated into health zone, technology zone, community zone and social media and networking zone will ensure you are provided with a complete holistic range of support.
As well as the exhibition hub, a programme of interactive talks and workshops will take throughout the day. Delivered by the regional diabetes specialised teams, the talks will cover many aspects of diabetes, including facts about diabetes, foot care, eye care, diet, exercise, physical activity, hypos and hypers, medications, blood-glucose testing, healthy cooking and much more.
We will announce full details of the different event’s sessions and workshops soon, but as well as the aforementioned, you can also expect activities such as trim-trail walks, Tai Chi, Nordic Walking, sit-down exercises, gentle aerobics, cookery demonstrations and even making your own 'Eatwell Plate' to take home.
What makes the Diabetes Wellness Days special?
It is the close relationship and collaboration between DRWF and the specialist diabetes teams from the Warwick, Coventry and Birmingham and Sandwell NHS Trusts, The South Asian Health Foundation and many other regional healthcare services. Together we work to reinforce key health messages to support improved diabetes self-management and well-being for all people attending the events.
Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes Award
The DRWF team were delighted to be awarded the Judges' Special Award and Highly Commended in the Empowering People with Diabetes category at the 2017 Quality in Care (QiC) awards evening. This award recognises the innovative practice demonstrating quality in diabetes management, education and services for people with diabetes and/or their families, throughout the UK. The judges said: “The events are clearly user-focused, providing an opportunity for peer support and re-engaging those users who have missed out on a structured education.” In November 2018 DRWF were also awarded Charity of the Year at the Diabetes Professional Care Industry Awards.
Our Diabetes Wellness Days are a key objective activity for the charity, which means we can subsidise the cost of attending for you. All we ask is a small fee of £5 per person. Your registration fee includes the full programme, delegate bag and name badge, the exhibition room, all-day refreshments, biscuits, a hot lunch and free parking. It also includes a copy of the post-event 'Top Tips' booklet in which we compile all the key messages from the day, as a reference and ongoing learning tool for you.
