A number of leading diabetes healthcare professionals head line-up to present at the event.

Healthcare professionals working in diabetes inpatient care are being encouraged to sign up for a free virtual event taking place on the afternoon of Thursday, 27th January 2022.

A sparkling line up of diabetes experts has been announced as speakers for the first UK Diabetes Inpatient Forum national conference entitled 100 Years of Insulin.

During the conference, leading figures in diabetes inpatient care will discuss how insulin has evolved throughout the last century to mark 100 years since insulin was first administered to a human.

Professor Partha Kar OBE, National Specialty Advisor for Diabetes with NHS England, and Professor Ketan Dhatariya, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology, will be among the keynote speakers hosting a session at the national conference.

Chairing the virtual event is Professor Gerry Rayman, Consultant Diabetologist and Clinical Lead for Diabetes GIRFT, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

At the national conference, Dr Mayank Patel, Consultant in Diabetes and Acute Medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and member of the DRWF Editorial Advisory Board and Professor Kar OBE, who is also Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, will showcase their new comic book project in a session entitled Insulin: Days of future, past and present.

The two consultants have teamed up to create a series of comic books highlighting elements of living with type 1 diabetes.

Dr Patel said: “To have had the opportunity to co-develop these comic books has been a career highlight for us.

“Platforms such as this 100 Years of Insulin Conference 2022 will help further champion the importance of diabetes education for all at scale.”

He added: “Being able to witness the 100-year milestone since insulin was discovered is a moment to truly savour and reflect on. Many people do not realise how important this is.”

Other keynote speakers at the conference include June James, Diabetes Nurse Consultant and Co-Chair of Trend Diabetes and Erwin Castro, Diabetes Nurse Consultant and Chair of the Diabetes Inpatient Specialist Nurse Group UK.

The UK Diabetes Inpatient Forum was established to share best practice and the latest developments and research in diabetes inpatient care. Its mission is to provide high-quality education for professionals to improve inpatient care for people with diabetes.
