Diabetes research / study recruitment: Looking for drivers with diabetes
Research project aims to explore how the communication between the brain and muscles is altered in individuals with diabetic foot neuropathy, and whether this impacts the ability to drive safely.
Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University are looking for adults 20 years and older who are active drivers and have been diagnosed with diabetes.
In addition, the research team are looking for people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
A call for volunteers said: “Numbness of the foot can make it difficult to control the accelerator pedal whilst driving. To learn more about this, we want to examine how the brain and muscle communicate during pedal control in individuals with diabetes and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.”
Study participants would be required to attend research labs at Manchester Metropolitan University for around two hours to perform some pedal control tasks whilst readings are taken to measure brain (via electroencephalogram, or EEG) and muscle (via electromyography, or EMG) activity. You will also perform two laps on a driving simulator kit.
To be eligible to participate in the study you must be aged 20 and above, have a full UK driving license, be an active driver (at least once a week) and diagnosed with diabetes, either with or without diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Study participants will receive a £20 amazon voucher, up to £40 travel reimbursement and snack and refreshments.
If you would like to take part, or receive more information, contact a member of the research team, Dr Johnny Parr, by emailing here, or by calling 07905890482
NOTE: DRWF will from time-to-time advise readers of ‘calls to participate’ in diabetes and related health research studies. It should not necessarily be considered that the charity is in any way connected to the study or the group issuing the call for participants. If we are involved in any way, we will make this known. We will only share external calls where we have confirmed that the study holds ethics committee approval, and the study is specific to diabetes and related health. Taking part in a medical research study is a big step and further helpful information can be found via the National Institute for Health and Care Research Clinical Trials Guide.
