Digital weight management programme to improve health recommended by NICE
People living with type 2 diabetes could benefit from app designed to encourage weight loss.
A specialist digital weight management programme developed by the NHS has been recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
The Gro Health W8Buddy app has been recommended in a recently published NICE report for delivering a specialist weight-management service to people who are eligible for weight-loss medications such as Wegovy.
The app could be useful for people living with type 2 diabetes who are trying to improve their lifestyle.
The W8Buddy app was developed by the DDM Health team (previously known as Diabetes Digital Media), obesity specialists at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and individuals within the specialist weight management service, the programme aims to empower people to lose weight and make improvements to their own health.
The platform is the first digital support tool developed specifically for NHS Tier 2 Weight Management Services (T3WMS).
Users are provided with a personalised weight management plan to support them and their family or carers to develop attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and skills to self-manage their health.
Gro Health is led by artificial intelligence expert Arjun Panesar and behavioural change psychologist Charlotte Summers – the creators of the Low Carb Program which support one in four people to achieve type 2 diabetes remission.
Arjun said: “Gro Health’s W8Buddy tool being recommended by NICE is a significant milestone in our mission to empower individuals on their weight-loss journey.
“This endorsement reinforces the effectiveness and reliability of our platform in supporting those looking to achieve weight loss.”
He added: “We are committed to providing innovative solutions that make a real difference in people’s lives, and this recognition from NICE is a testament to the positive impact we are making on the path to healthier, happier lives.
“This recommendation reinforces our belief in the importance of accessible, evidence-based tools to help people achieve their weight-loss goals.”
Gro Health provides personalised self-management and behaviour change support across the four key pillars of health: mental wellbeing, sleep, nutrition and activity.
Since its launch in June 2021, the app has been awarded from NHS, the Association of Obesity Studies, and launched in numerous settings including Cornwall, West Sussex, and with organisations like Transport for London and Swiss Re.
Wegovy was launched in the UK this week as option for weight management in line with NICE guidance, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The treatment could help people with pre-diabetes and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
