DRWF Events: Diabetes Wellness Morning returns to Hartlepool
People living with diabetes offered information, support and community at educational wellness event.
DRWF recently welcomed people living with diabetes and their friends and carers to a second annual Diabetes Wellness Morning in Hartlepool.
The event was held at the National Museum of the Royal Navy on 16th November to coincide with World Diabetes Day (14th November).
DRWF worked closely with the Hartlepool Diabetes Support Group and the Specialist Diabetes Team from North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust to provide a morning of information, support and friendship to help people manage and improve their diabetes.
The event was run Hayley Hakansson, DRWF volunteer and member of the Hartlepool Diabetes Support Group, with support from husband Tony.
Lee Calladine, DRWF Event Coordinator, said: “Hayley is an amazing volunteer and feels very much like a member of the DRWF team. Hayley is a huge advocate for us in Hartlepool and wider area and regularly takes our resources into the diabetes centre, gives DRWF packs to new members of the support group and refers people to us all the time.
“We would like to extend our thanks to Hayley and Tony for their amazing efforts supporting the charity.”
Diabetes Specialist Nurses Julie Sinclair and Patricia Lowther from University Hospital of Hartlepool provided a morning of talks and held a diabetes question and answer session.
Over the morning delegates participated in a Christmas quiz, and had an opportunity to buy raffle tickets for a chance to win from a selection of generously donated prizes.
In the build-up to the event Hayley joined Lunch Show DJ Lee Theasby live in the Radio Hartlepool studio to chat about DRWF, the Diabetes Wellness Morning and the Hartlepool Diabetes Support Group.
Hayley said: “The DRWF Diabetes Wellness Morning was a great day from start to finish. The quiz went down a treat and was a lot of fun. We enjoyed a great lunch and raised £156 with the raffle. Everyone went home smiling and saying what a good time they had learning about diabetes. I felt this was worth all the effort put in to make the day.
“Thank you so much to everyone who attended. The great comments make our work worthwhile. Thank you especially to Julie and Patricia, our amazing Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Tony from Healthwatch Hartlepool and Jan from Hartlepool Carers for their time and support, plus all the team at the Royal Naval Museum Hartlepool for all their help in hosting this amazing event. Here’s to next year.”
