DRWF Events: Report from our Diabetes Wellness Type 1 Family Camp
DRWF, in collaboration with children’s charity Over The Wall, present a family camp for children living with type 1 diabetes and their families and carers.
DRWF team members were pleased to join their colleagues from children's charity Over the Wall at our recent in-person 'Diabetes Wellness Type 1 Family Camp'.
Returning to NAYC and ACUK (Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs and Action Centres UK) at Whitemoor Lakes in Staffordshire from the 18th to 20th August, we were joined by 24 excited families.
The residential Camps are an opportunity for young people with type 1 diabetes and their families to enjoy some down-time in a safe and welcoming environment with stacks of indoor and outdoor activities to get involved in.
Families, the children and adults alike, were encouraged to laugh, be silly, be adventurous and be brave.
The camps provide a special place to build confidence, resilience and perhaps most importantly new friendships, which often last well beyond Camp.
As families started to arrive on the Friday afternoon the noise and excitement ramped up.
In total, more than 86 Campers arrived ready to meet the camp volunteers, check into their rooms, unpack, and then gather together in the main hall for the opening ceremony and a welcome dinner ahead of a weekend of fun activities.
Activities over the weekend included climbing, archery, dancing, games and quizzes and much more, all while meeting and getting to know other children and families living with type 1 diabetes.
Parents also had the opportunity to join focus groups and share their thoughts, questions and experiences with the DRWF team and Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse Heather Holland from George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in Warwickshire.
Lee Calladine, DRWF Events Coordinator, said: “As always ,the camp was enjoyed by all involved and campers went home buzzing with excitement and energy and new friends. DRWF and OTW are already looking forward to welcoming many more new families to Camp in the Cloud in December.
“We were pleased that many of the families joined us at our recent United Through Diabetes event and will also be taking part in our focus group programme where we aim to understand the needs of families living with type 1 diabetes and the support, services and resources they need.”
