DRWF joins “small but mighty” charity organisations at Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) event.

The work of research charities with an annual spend of less than £500,000 was under the microscope recently at a workshop event.

DRWF represented, along with 30 other charities as members of the AMRC, a membership body representing the leading medical and health research charities who deliver high-quality research that saves and improves lives.

The event was held at AMRC’s London offices in May and featured a presentation by DRWF CEO Sarah Tutton.

Mrs Tutton highlighted the fantastic results of DRWF’s Pump Priming grants in delivering tangible clinical benefits for the diabetes community.

DRWF Pump Priming awards are primarily proof-of-concept grants which enable the funded researcher to gather pilot study data for a specific project with a view to leveraging higher value, longer-term funding, post award. DRWF has seen great success in this respect.

The Small but Mighty workshop provided an opportunity for AMRC member charities to come together to explore learning and best practice and to discuss, in a safe space, the shared challenges these organisations face as smaller funders.

The workshop was designed for senior leaders of AMRC member and introductory member charities.

AMRC said: “As we begin to develop our new strategic plan, the workshop will allow us to hear how AMRC can best support our smaller charities, to ensure we are meeting your needs as effectively as possible.”

At the workshop Dan Worth, Data and Insights Analyst at AMRC, presented figures about smaller charity member organisations.

Almost half of AMRC’s membership is made up of charities with annual research spend less than £500,000. Together they spent £11.3 million on UK medical research in 2022.
