Focus on education for people with diabetes at event for healthcare professionals

Following a difficult 18 months Rebooting diabetes care is the theme of the first major diabetes conference in two years.

The programme for this year’s Diabetes Professional Care is set to tackle some of the biggest issues facing healthcare professionals.

Diabetes Professional Care returns as an in-person event at Olympia London on 10th and 11th November and has been re-designed in response to the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The programme for the CPD-certified (continuing professional development) event for healthcare professionals working in diabetes is now available to view online.

Key issues including the impact of Covid-19 on diabetes-related conditions and health inequalities will be explored during the free to attend event. Interactive workshops, expert speakers and topical panel discussions will give delegates exclusive access to specialist education and clinical skills training.

Maggie Meer, founder of Diabetes Professional Care, said: “Diabetes teams are facing huge backlogs and the challenge of ensuring people with diabetes are accessing services, as well as ensuring people with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes don’t slip through the net. So, it is more important than ever that diabetes teams come together to share best practice and help to shape the future of diabetes care.

“This is the first major diabetes event in two years, and we have worked hard to ensure that we deliver key sessions that healthcare professionals have missed out on in the last 18 months. The whole programme has been shaped around the reboot agenda, with sessions dedicated to helping teams meet challenges head on with the right knowledge and latest evidence.

“The return of Diabetes Professional Care is the first step towards ‘rebooting diabetes care’ and recovering from the devastating impact of Covid-19.”

Key speakers include NHS National Specialist Advisor for Diabetes, Professor Partha Kar OBE, who will talk about type 1 diabetes in younger people and transition. He will also chair a panel discussing the topic The digital divide: What can I do in my practice to improve access to diabetes technology.

Also speaking at the event will be Professor Jonathan Valabhji OBE, National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity on the subject Understanding obesity as a disease and will be on the ABCD panel discussing Covid and diabetes care – New guidelines and what we have learnt.

In addition, Dr Pratik Choudhary, Consultant in Diabetes and Professor of Diabetes at the University of Leicester, will join the keynote panel exploring Diabetes therapy in 2022 – what is going to be new?

The issue of healthcare inequality will be scrutinised at another debate panel, with Dr Bola Owolabi, Director of Health Inequalities for NHS England and NHS Improvement, one of the keynote speakers taking part.

The panel will explore why healthcare inequality still persists, looking at the preventable and unjust differences in health status between groups, and what is being done to address disparities in diabetes care.

Sessions include: 

· Practical tips for managing diabetes in the vulnerable in care and nursing homes 

· Panel: Cardio, renal and metabolic disease – A multi-disciplinary team approach to bridging the gap 

· Panel: The challenges and practicalities of inpatient diabetes management with the DISN (Diabetes Inpatient Specialist Nurse group) 

· Improving the identification and treatment of monogenic diabetes 

· The practicalities of treating people living with diabetes and chronic kidney disease

Workshops include: 

· The impact of Covid-19 on diabetic eye health 

· Practical tips for taking a multicultural approach to diabetes care 

· Dementia and diabetes training 

· How to in primary care: Choosing the right treatment for your patient 

· Your toolkit for accurate diagnosis in diabetes

The latest diabetes products and services will be showcased as part of the conference’s interactive exhibition.

The Technology and Innovation Zone will also feature several talks exploring the impact of the latest diabetes technology:

· Improving diabetes care and transforming digital health 

· Continuous glucose monitoring, hypoglycaemia and driving 

· Continuous glucose monitoring and pregnancy.

DPC2021 is open to any healthcare professional involved in the prevention, treatment and management of diabetes and its related conditions.
