Latest guidance published on delivering ‘gold standard’ end of life care for people with diabetes
Document produced by Trend Diabetes for healthcare professionals caring for people living with diabetes.
Newly updated guidance for healthcare professionals has recently been published to ensure people with diabetes benefit from the best possible care during their final months.
The document End of Life Guidance for Diabetes Care was produced by Trend Diabetes and includes a series of recommendations to promote a consistent, high-quality approach towards end of life diabetes care.
This fourth edition provides updates and new recommendations relating to those with cancer, end stage renal failure, and people in the last days of life due to Covid-19.
Also featured is updated information on glucose lowering therapies including the newer insulin analogues, while advanced care directives have been reviewed.
Nurse Consultant June James, Co-Chair of Trend Diabetes, a national organisation which represents all diabetes nursing groups, said: “Caring for people with diabetes as they approach the last year, month and days of life often falls to non-diabetes specialist healthcare professionals, so it is important that clear clinical recommendations are accessible to promote good quality care.”
Professor Alan Sinclair, from the Foundation for Diabetes Research in Older People and Diabetes Frail, said: “People with diabetes who are at the end of life have a specific set of care needs including those relating to health and social care. A holistic approach addressing both the clinical aspects of care, and psychological and clinical challenges when caring for individuals living with diabetes is important and this is no less valuable in the last year of life.”
Topics covered in the guidance include nutrition, steroid therapy, medication, sick-day management, workforce training and withdrawal of treatment. The guidance is also designed to highlight awareness of training and educational needs.
