NHS report highlights prevalence of diabetes across England
A new report from the NHS has highlighted the prevalence of 21 different health conditions across England – including diabetes.
The NHS Digital report was produced using information voluntarily provided by 97% of general practices in England. It is collected through the Quality and Outcomes Framework, mainly used to improve the care patients receive by rewarding practices for the quality of care they provide.
The annual Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) - Prevalence, Achievements and Exceptions Report, England 2015-16 report also identified how the number of cases for these conditions had changed since the previous year.
The rates of diagnosis of diabetes in England was reported to have increased slightly to 6.6% from 6.4% in 2014-15. The South of England region has the lowest number of cases of diabetes for all regions at 6.0%, at sub-region level; the lowest prevalence is in London South at 5.7%.
Among the statistics revealed in the report, it was found that in 2015 there were 49.1 million items prescribed for diabetes in England
In 2014-15 it was reported that diabetes was a factor in 48,581 hospital admissions, and in 2015, diabetes was the cause of 5,582 registered deaths.
