OBE award for NHS diabetes expert Professor Partha Kar
Portsmouth-based doctor awarded in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
Professor Partha Kar, National Specialty Advisor for Diabetes with NHS England and Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is to receive an OBE for his services to people living with diabetes.
In addition, Professor Kar is well known among many DRWF supporters for his involvement in Diabetes Wellness Events over the years giving presentations – continued most recently at November’s United Through Diabetes online event.
In recent years Professor Kar has also restructured the way diabetes is treated in Portsmouth and helped develop an app to help people manage their health.
Professor Kar was among more than 30 doctors who received an award in the 2021 New Year honours list.
Professor Kar said: “It’s a very pleasant surprise and an end of year present for what has been a very difficult year for everyone.”
As reported in Portsmouth-based newspaper The News, Professor Kar said: “I started as a trainee at Queen Alexandra in 2003, so Portsmouth is very much my home.
“We launched the app last year and it already has more than 100,000 users, who can track their diabetes with a simple scan using their phones.
“Especially during the coronavirus pandemic, where people have been isolated at home, this has proven to be such a valuable tool.”
Professor Partha Kar has been a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust since 2008. He was the Clinical Director of Diabetes from 2009 to 2015, being part of a multiple national award-winning department due to its services and care provided. He is the pioneer of the Super Six Diabetes Model, which aims to deliver diabetes care differently and is recognised as one of the good examples of integrated care.
He is also a Professor at the University of Leicester working with the Leicester Diabetes Centre.
