Skin reactions reported by type 1 diabetes flash glucose sensor users
Medical device alert issued due to complication with sensor used by people with type 1 diabetes.
Reports that some users of the FreeStyle Libre flash glucose sensor manufactured by Abbott have experienced skin reactions to the sensor adhesive has led to advice being issued for those affected.
A medical device alert has been issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The MHRA said: “Users may have been applying barrier creams, sprays or patches under their sensor to reduce skin reactions. This is not advised as it may affect the device performance.
“If users experience redness, itching or blistering, seek guidance from a healthcare professional on continued use of the device. They will also be able to advise on possible alternative glucose monitoring systems.
“The manufacturer, Abbott, has confirmed that they have revised the formulation of the adhesive, which will be available in the UK from April 2019.
“Please refer to the Medical Device Alert (MDA) for further information and any action to take.”
