Theatre show brings children’s book about living with type 1 diabetes to life
Fresh from a series of recent performances a children’s theatre show is preparing for more shows in 2025.
A children’s book detailing the trials and adventures of living with type 1 diabetes has been turned into a stage production.
Jade Byrne – who herself has lived with type 1 diabetes, since childhood – is the author of Daisy Donald.
The book features illustrations by Hayley Smith and told the story of Daisy, who “wears an invisible cape everyday, to help her fight an invisible illness, her monster, type 1 diabetes”.
The book is an entertaining story for all young people, with education about type 1 diabetes and how friends and family can provide emotional support for those with the condition.
Since publication in 2019, Jade has worked to transform the book into a family-friendly stage show, that has recently toured in the UK, with plans for more shows in the new year.
Jade has been acting professionally for 13 years, and has toured with Northern Stage Company, Company of Angels and Open Clasp Theatre Company.
Jade’s TV roles have included Casualty (BBC1), Inspector George Gently (BBC1), The Dumping Ground (CBBC) and Mount Pleasant (Sky Living).
Jade said: “Daisy Donald is a family show that takes you on a remarkable journey of learning about disabilities and difference, filled with take-home songs and positive messages of acceptance.”
