Type 2 diabetes treatment could help reduce the risk of a heart attack
Researchers believe the risk of a heart attack for people with type 2 diabetes could be reduced thanks to a new treatment.
Following trials of Victoza (liraglutide), a new class of injectable drug for type 2 diabetes, researchers found the treatment could significantly reduce the risk of heart-related health problems, heart attacks and strokes by up to 13%.
The results of the trial were presented recently at the American Diabetes Association's 76th Scientific Sessions (ADA 2016) and the findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The new treatment could help reduce the risk of heart-related health complications for people with type 2 diabetes
To date the treatment is the only approved drug of its kind to demonstrate a superior reduction of major heart problems, both in addition to standard of care, in a cardiovascular outcomes trial.
Professor Steve Bain, trial leader and Assistant Medical Director for Research and Development for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board and Clinical Lead for the Diabetes Research Unit, Wales said: “Liraglutide is the first GLP-1 therapy that has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of major CV events and represents great progress in our understanding of liraglutide’s clinical profile.
“Given the important link between diabetes and cardiovascular complications, it is important to be able to trust that any diabetes treatment prescribed does not add to that risk. The study findings for liraglutide have surpassed our expectations in providing us with a tool that can effectively help to treat people with type 2 diabetes and control blood sugar levels, with the additional reassurance of reducing cardiovascular risk.”
